About Freya

Freya was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up surrounded by professors, witches, hippies, cats, artists, psychiatrists, and musicians. She started reading books almost before she could walk. Later, she graduated from a posh London drama school and spent many years working in the theater.

Freya loves acting and writing. Both art forms let her step inside the thoughts and feelings of another person. Both dissolve boundaries and remind her just how big and deep and exciting life actually is.

In her nonfiction for young readers, Freya aims to combine excellent scholarship with fun. She holds a graduate degree in history from St. Andrews University in Scotland.

As a fiction writer, Freya is inspired by authors who explore the dark and mysterious and adventurous. She loves the work of Arthur Conan Doyle, Joan Aiken, Chris Priestley, and M.R. James, among many others.

Freya is an AMI-certified Montessori teacher at the elementary school level. She’s a proud member of SCBWI.
